AbstractThe experimental prediction of DJF (97/98) and MAM (98) using CPTEC/COLA Global Circulation Model performed in december 1997 is shown for 3 sets of integrations. One ensemble had 25 initial conditions and persisted SST anomaly, another one had 5 initial conditions, predicted SST in the Pacific Ocean and persisted anomaly in the other oceans and the third set was an ensemble with 5 initial conditions and predicted SST in the Pacific and Atlantic Oceans. In the first case the dispersion of the ensemble members is shown for several areas of Brazil. The best convergence among members are found for Northeast (NE) and North of Brazil. Central Brazil and South Region also shows consistency among members. Large dispersion is found among members in the Southeast Region of Brazil. The best predictions were made for the rainy season of NE (MAM) and the patterns of the 3 sets are very similar, rainfall below average in the Northeast Region, Central Brazil, Amazonia and rainfall above average in the South Region. The diferences in DJF between prediction and observation occurred due to changes in the SST of the Atlantic Ocean.
